Bipolar Disorder Treatment in New York City
Manic Depressive Treatment
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive disorder or "manic depression," is a psychiatric disorder characterized by oscillating, polarized moods. These opposing moods include episodic highs known as "mania," as well as contrasting episodes of depression. Depending on the type of episode experienced, symptoms can range from elevated mood, inflated self esteem, euphoria and little need for sleep, to fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, lack of self-esteem, and persistent sadness. Patients suffering from bipolar disorder will alternate between these two moods of mania and depression, sometimes with respites of normal mood in between, in a way that severely disrupts everyday function and activities.
Manic Episodes
Manic episodes are characterized by elevated levels of energy and mood, and are considered to be the hallmark of bipolar disorder. Mania consists of a marked period in which the patient experiences an elevated, euphoric mood. Additionally, patients experience an increase in energy and a reduced need for sleep. Oftentimes, patients will wake hours before their normal rising time, or go days without sleeping or feeling tired. Symptoms of mania are accompanied by a perception of thoughts racing quickly, as well as pressured speech.
Beyond elevated levels of energy and mood, patients may experience delusional and grandiose thoughts. A sense of being uncontrollable may spur patients to feel that they are "on a mission," chosen to pursue a delusional or eccentric goal.
Depressive Episodes
Depressive episodes are characterized by persistent feelings of deep sadness, anxiety, and helplessness, with sufferers experiencing fatigue, lost interest in routine activities, and irregular sleep patterns. Patients experiencing a depressive episode have problems concentrating, socializing, and motivating themselves to perform activities that were once enjoyable. Other symptoms characteristic of a depressive episode include feelings of loneliness, self-loathing, apathy and indifference. Suicidal thoughts are also common to depressive episodes. Severe episodes of depression may also feature symptoms similar to those of psychosis, including delusions and hallucinations.
